Design Rules Setting

PCB design is not simply placing components and creating connections. While designing a PCB we consider certain things like clearance between vias, tracks and pads, individual nets, group of nets, component placements etc. To successfully complete a more complex PCB we should also consider issues such as net impedance, crosstalk, signal reflections, path lengths, etc.

It will be more practical if the constraints of the designs are pre implemented as set of design rules. This will enable you to effectively get with designing, safely with the knowledge that the rules system is working to ensure success.

In order to design and satisfy all requirements of the design, EDWinXP has an option to set the project design rules prior to PCB designing. These Design rules are defined and managed in the Project Design Rules option in EDWinXP Project Explorer. To simplify the process of defining and managing rules, you can define general rules that cover broad requirements and then override these with specific rules in specific situations.
