Crashes in Edwin XP 1.71

Postby arcturus » Wed Mar 03, 2010 10:14 pm

I'm experiencing a very annoying situation: Edwin crashes every now and then, with apparently no reason.
I'm working under XP Pro, and I had some crashes during the past months, but not very often. I use the autosave function, calibrated on a 10 minutes rate, and I can recover most of the job done (I'm not happy anyway....)
After the last update EdWin crashes continuosly, up to 5 times in an afternoon, and basically the crashes seem to be unrelated each other.

Example: one time crashed using the undo function (I'm sure I'm not alone) another time crashed after I pressed the Esc key to stop an action on SchEd, some times I'm simply dragging something on the screen. One of the last crashes occoured when I tried to assign a value to a resistor: I simply clicked on the resistor, then Edwin crashed.

Sometime I have message errors like: Unespected error, then runtime error 50003, and finally a couple of runtime errors 440. Last error line was written in Italian language, so I think that the OS was interferred by the Edwin errors.

Other times I click something and EdWin simply disappears..... And no errors are reported by the OS.

The last time, about 30m minutes ago, not only Edwin disappeared, but also it was not able to save the timed bak file. And I worked for about an hour, so I espected to recovery something.

Please let me know how to solve this situation without me havong to save the job every 5 minutes.

At the end, one clue: there is a condition that sistematically crashes SchEd on my pc.

Every time I place a "special" part, a part that has only symbol and no package such as a sheet legend, AND i place it against another special part, Edwin simply vanishes.

In order to obtain this, I place the symbol so that they are aligned on the right, the upper right corner of symbol1 over lower right corner of symbol2.

If these corners are not superposed, all goes well.

I've not explored all the combinations.

Just one more clue: I recovered from scratch the last message I had when Edwin crashed.

This is the text I copied:

Runtime error -2147221008 800401F0
CoInitialize non รจ stato chiamato (this is the italian message)
(CoInitialize has not been invoked)

At this point Edwin still seems to react in some way, but after a couple of click on the File menu, it shuts and a new error wondow is presented on the display:

Runtime 440
Errore di automazione
(Automation error)

That's all for now

Bye

Well, I don't know if anybody out there cares, but here is another step.

Up today I tried to avoid any manouvre potentially dangerous for the program stability.

Today I was trying to simulate a little piece of circuit using Edspice (5 resistors, 2 caps, VDC and VGEN). Just to avoid to manually set up a breadboard (just the thing the sim is dedicated to...)

I made an error: I used UNDO instead of deleting a badly added component.

Of course EdWin crashed.

Error reported (I made a sort of translation from the italian messages, the first message has been lost):

- Runtime error -2147417848 (80010108); Automation error.

Then I tried to save the job, no way. The main was still active, I was able to open the pcb and see the components on the board; I was able to generate a list of materials, but I had no way to reopen the schematic editor.

When I try I get this error:

- The called (SERVER[NON SERVER APPLICATION)] is not avalable and is disappeared. All connections (handlers?) are invalid.

I'm really going to lose patience: up to now I worked without important problems but acyually I'm wasting too much time with a program that instead would save it.

I'm seriously thinking to reinstall a previous version.

We have uploaded the new EDWinXP 1.71 in our website www.visionics.a.se. Please download it and install. Before installation, please take all backup from JOB, LIB folders etc, then please uninstall the existing version of EDwinXP present in your computer . while uninstallation, you can retrieve the license to a USB drive. If you find any difficulty in retrieving license, or licensing the newly installed software, please feel free to contact us.

Just to be sure I've correctly understood your reply:

Actually I'm running EdWinXP 1.71 regularly updated on 15 days basis.

A new 1.71 version is available on Visionics server
I have to download it.
I have to backup all my private work dirs and libs
I must fully remove my version in order to recover the license
I must reinstall the new 1.71 version.

Can I recover the ini file in order to avoid to reconfigure all the features?

Please confirm before I go into troubles (I think I'll do it during the week end)

Do you think that I may suffer of some kind of corruption and for this reason I must reinstall?

After having downloaded a former installing file, I remember that when I tried to install directly from the PC hard disk (desktop position), the setup didn't ask for the licence. Should I copy the installing files on a separate CD and than install from it?

Dear Paolo,

You can save your settings from EDWinXP -> System -> Save Settings and after reinstallation, you can restore the settings. You can experiment it before the uninstallation.
If a license file is not present, it will ask for license. You can save installation files on a CD. The zip file shall be unzipped in a drive's root and the continue with the reinstallation. Many users who updated didnt result in an error and here it may be caused by any other file mismatching etc.
