Bug in print manager (and all print functions)

Postby TLEC » Wed Feb 03, 2010 8:43 pm

There is no way to select printer, neither in Print manager nor in the print function within schematic editor.

Dear TLEC,

Please clarify what is the error obtained when performing the schematic print. Please also check with all the printer setting, if the printer is properly connected, or whether the print is disabled in the schematic editor for that specific machine only etc.

The thing is, I can't select what printer to use, there is no such function within the print manager, it allways sends the output to the default printer, and that is not what I want.
I want a "Printer Setup" function, where I can select the printer to use.

THere is something called "Printer Setup" in the menues, but it is actually a "Print" function instead, because the choises I have is "Print" or "Cancel".
Similarr the "Page Setup" is missing the possibility to select printer, only margins papersize and orientation.

Here is a few screenshoots.
Number 1, From "Printer/Printer Setup", as you can see, there is no "OK" butto, only a print button.
Number 2, From "Printer/Page setup", As you can see, there is nothing to select printer.
Number 3, From "Page Properties/Printer", Nothing there.
Number 4, From "Page Properties/Pages", Nothing there.
Number 5, From "Page Properties/Printer/Page Setup", Nothing there.

BTW, The same problem is in "Schematic Editor/Print", there is no way to setup the printer in beforehand.

Well, as you can see on my screenshots, my dialogs does not look like this, the "Printer" Button is missing.

This is the same on all installations I have.
Could it be that for some reason, you are using the wrong system call, and wrong dialog is opened in VISTA64?

Dear TLEC,

This is an error in Vista based system. Here, you can select the required printer and change the settings by invoking the 'Preferences' button.

Dear TLEC,

This is not a bug. You can invoke the Printer Setup from File of Print Manager to obtain the Preferences button. Please find the attached file for Printer preferences.

And then, the only option after that is "print", and I don't want that, whithout preview first

Dear TLEC,

The preview can be viewed from Print queue of the Print Manager. Right Click the print queue -> Show document preview.

Yes I know that, But, I cant select the printer before the preview, since the only choice of printer-setup dialog is print, there is no OK-Button.

And yes I consider this as a bug, since all other software I am running on my VISTA machines do have a proper print setup dialog, even those designed for WINNT/XP.

TLEC is right, it is bad that you have to go directly to print. The option to go to the printer manager que is not an alternative for most printers. If you are on a network, printing to a server you maybe can't even open or cancel your print jobs.

But this is how it have been for very long and I have been used to this drawback but maybe it is time to fix it? It is an EdWin only oddity.

Thanks Bengt, and Yes all my printers/Plottes is on the network. Nevertheless, a proper printer setup-dialog, regardless of OS is required,.

Dear TLEC,

the printer setup API from microsoft behaves differenty in Vista and Prior to Vista OS.

Note the explaination from Microsoft

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms646937(VS.85).aspx

Windows Vista: To swith printer selection, use PrintDlg or PrintDlgEx. The PageSetupDlg for Windows Vista does not contain the Printer button.

I found a more detailed explaination from a MS forum. Its written there as

http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums ... f1360f7347

Unfortunately, our developers did remove the “Printer…” button on PageSetupDlg for Windows Vista. This was done for specific reason. It is because they do not recommend switching printers from the page setup dialog, where there is some information in the page setup dialog which is printer specific.

For more information about PageSetupDlg, please refer to the following link (you can find the explanation of obsolete flag PSD_DISABLEPRINTER):

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms646842(VS.85).aspx

In this case you have to select the printer setup dialog given in printe Manager to select the printer.

This is true even if you check in "NOTEPAD".You cannot see a "Printer" button in Vista , in Notepad too

best regards

In Notepad, Word, Excell, you name it, I do have a proper "printer Setup" dialog, where I can select the printer before I preview or print the documents/files.
The only Software I have on my computers that I CANT'T do it is in EDWin.

If MS have changed the API, so be it, you should be able to handle it anyway.
